Frequently Asked Questions

Questions about Acupuncture How Does Acupuncture Work? Acupuncture channels are energetic pathways that run throughout the body creating links between the organs, bones and tendons. They contain energy known as Qi (pronounced Chee). When Qi gets blocked or becomes stagnant, it can cause complications which affects both physical and emotional well-being. Acupuncture points are small areas under your skin where Qi gathers, creating energetic pools that are accessible with acupuncture needles. What Does Acupuncture Treat? Whereas the focus of Western medicine is to treat symptoms associated with a particular illness, acupuncture treats the person and not the disease. What this means is that each person experiences a unique set of circumstances that contribute to the relative state of disease and wellness. Each treatment is fine-tuned to treat every individual in the specific way that they need to be treated, based on the signs, symptoms, and circumstances they display. Based on this...

Menopause Through the Lens of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Menopause Through the Lens of Traditional Chinese Medicine Menopause is a natural transition. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), menopause is viewed as a normal stage of life rather than an illness. As our constitutional reserves naturally decline, the body adapts to a new balance. Everyone's experience is unique, which is why symptoms and treatments can vary so much from person to person. Key TCM Concepts Qi – The body's vital energy or functional activity. Qi powers all of the body's processes and keeps everything moving smoothly. Blood – In TCM, Blood has a broader meaning than the blood measured in a blood test. It nourishes the body and mind, supporting the muscles, skin, brain, emotions and sleep. Yin – The cooling, nourishing and restorative aspect of the body. Yang – The warming, active and functional aspect of the body. Kidney System – Associated with growth, development, fertility, ageing and our constitutional reserves (Jing). Spleen S...

Acupuncture for Insomnia: A Traditional Chinese Medicine Perspective Sleep is one of the foundations of health. When it is restful and consistent, it restores the body, calms the mind, and helps us meet each day with clarity and resilience. But when sleep is disrupted, everything else can feel harder. Insomnia is one of the most common issues people face today, and it takes many forms: difficulty falling asleep, waking frequently through the night, early morning waking, or restless sleep that doesn’t feel refreshing. Modern life—with its screens, stress, and irregular routines—certainly plays a role. But insomnia has been recognised and treated in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for thousands of years. Acupuncture, herbal medicine, and lifestyle guidance all offer effective, natural ways to support healthy sleep. In this post, we’ll explore how TCM understands insomnia, the different “patterns” that can cause it, and how acupuncture works to restore balance. We’ll also s...
